You Are Not Broken

Most people spend years trying to heal and still wake up feeling stuck. That’s not a failure of willpower. It’s unfinished business stored in your body.

The books. The therapy. The lifestyle changes. You’ve done it all, and something still feels stuck. The same patterns resurface. The same story plays on repeat. If this sounds familiar, we want you to know something important: this is not a character flaw.

Every emotional experience you’ve ever had every moment of fear, grief, shame, or overwhelm that you didn’t have space to fully process left an imprint. Not just in your mind, but in your nervous system, your muscles, your cells. Your body has been quietly holding these stored emotions and subconscious beliefs for decades, running the show beneath the surface of your awareness.

“The body keeps the score. And until we work with the body, we’re only addressing part of the picture.”

The Science: Where Emotions Actually Live

This isn’t metaphor, it’s biology. Dr. Candace Pert’s landmark research on neuropeptides showed that emotional biochemistry isn’t confined to the brain. Receptor sites for emotion-related molecules are distributed throughout the body: in the gut, the heart, the immune cells. Her book Molecules of Emotion (1997) brought this into mainstream scientific conversation and changed how researchers think about the mind-body relationship.

More recently, somatic researchers conducted large-scale body-mapping studies in which thousands of participants across different cultures were asked to shade where they physically felt specific emotions. The results were remarkably consistent, which points to the same regions of the body, regardless of language or background.

WHERE EMOTIONS ARE HELD: A BODY MAP

Emotion Location in Body What the Research Shows
Fear Chest, Throat, Legs Classic fight-or-flight: chest tightens, throat constricts, legs prepare to run. Chronic fear is strongly associated with adrenal fatigue.
Grief & Sadness Chest, Throat, Lungs People describe grief as a heaviness that makes it hard to breathe fully. Chinese medicine has linked the lungs to grief for over 2,000 years.
Anger Liver, Jaw, Shoulders, Neck We literally “clench” when angry. Chronic suppressed anger is associated with persistent neck and shoulder tension and, in TCM, the liver and gallbladder.
Anxiety Stomach, Chest, Gut The gut-brain axis is central here. Anxiety activates the enteric nervous system the “second brain” producing nausea, upset, and bowel changes that are entirely real.
Shame Face, Chest, Stomach Shame produces one of the most full-body physiological responses of any emotion: blushing, hunching, and a stomach-dropping sensation consistent across cultures.
Trauma Hips, Lower Back, Diaphragm Bessel van der Kolk’s research documents how unresolved trauma is stored in the body’s nervous system which is why somatic therapies can release what talk alone sometimes cannot.

TRADITIONAL SYSTEMS KNEW THIS FIRST

Traditional Chinese Medicine has mapped organ-emotion relationships for over two millennia: the liver and gallbladder holding anger, the kidneys and bladder holding fear, the lungs and large intestine carrying grief. Ayurveda tells a similar story through the lens of chakras and energy centers. What modern neuroscience is now confirming, ancient healing traditions intuited long ago.

Why Talk Therapy Alone Often Isn’t Enough

Talking about what happened can be profoundly valuable. But there’s something important that research has revealed: when a trauma survivor verbally retells their experience, brain imaging shows that the same neural pathways activate as during the original event.

RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT

Bessel van der Kolk (Massachusetts General Hospital) Neuroimaging studies showed that during trauma recall, the right amygdala activates at levels comparable to the original event. Broca’s area, responsible for speech, partially shuts down. The body is not remembering; it is reliving.

Roger Pitman (Harvard Medical School) Research showed that PTSD patients listening to trauma narratives exhibited elevated heart rate, skin conductance, and blood pressure identical in kind to acute stress responses from verbal description alone.

Rachel Yehuda (Mount Sinai School of Medicine) Even anticipating discussion of trauma triggered measurable hormonal stress responses before a word was spoken. Her epigenetic research showed these stress markers can be passed to the next generation.

A 2015 meta-analysis in Clinical Psychology Review found that trauma therapies requiring detailed verbal narration showed significantly higher dropout rates than body-based approaches suggesting patients were experiencing the retelling as physiologically intolerable.

The takeaway is not that talk therapy is without value; it is. But for many people, especially those carrying deep or complex trauma, the body needs a different kind of attention. The emotional imprint lies below the level words can reach.

What Is Mind Body Spirit Release®?

What Is Mind Body Spirit Release®

Mind Body Spirit Release® was developed by our founder, Tracy Southwick, as a gentle yet powerful healing modality that works at the emotional, mental, and physical levels of the body, going directly to the root causes of what’s keeping you stuck.

Using muscle testing, a form of biofeedback that taps directly into the nervous system, we identify the specific stored emotions, subconscious beliefs, and energetic blocks creating stress in your body. Once identified, those blocks are released through targeted stimulation of acupressure points and nervous system pathways, calming the stress response and allowing the body to return to its natural state of flow and healing.

This is not talk therapy. This is not symptom management. This is going to the root and releasing stored experiences without re-triggering the original trauma.

WHAT MIND BODY SPIRIT RELEASE® CAN HELP WITH

  • Anxiety, chronic overwhelm, and stress, including the limiting beliefs quietly directing your decisions
  • Chronic pain, digestive issues, skin conditions, sleep disruption, and fatigue that often have emotional roots
  • Deep or complex trauma processed and integrated without re-traumatization
  • Feeling “stuck” despite having tried everything else
  • Heightened sensitivity or intolerance to conventional approaches

This Work Goes Beyond You

Some of what you carry is older than you. Patterns, fears, and emotional imprints can be passed down through family lines inherited before you had any say in the matter. Rachel Yehuda’s research on epigenetic transmission of trauma provides compelling biological evidence for what many traditions have long understood: that unhealed wounds travel across generations.

When you do the work of releasing these at the root, you’re not only transforming your own life. You’re interrupting a generational chain. What you put down, the people who come after you don’t have to pick up.

“This is not about fixing you. It’s about finally coming home to yourself.”

You Were Designed to Heal

Your body knows how to find safety. It knows how to restore balance. The nervous system, when given the right conditions, naturally moves toward regulation and wholeness. Mind Body Spirit Release® simply removes what has been standing in the way: the stored emotions, the old beliefs, the energetic residue of experiences your body was never given the space to complete.

Tracy Southwick also founded the Mind Body Spirit Release® Academy, where health practitioners from around the world are trained and accredited in this technique, bringing this work to people who need it most.
